Evening

Much like Day (1995) and Morning (1995) this painting is a definite member of the Angels series created by Pogrebinsky in the mid 1990s.   The being, which is neither female nor male, but simply a holy deity with a mind and soul which we cannot fathom, is kneeling in a prayer like form.   The deep richness of the gold is a constant reminder of Pogrebinsky’s capabilities with transferring the unreal liquid paints into a solid visual format, even when dealing with such philosophical images as halo’s and wings.    Gold, as in so many other times, plays an important role in this work.   Even though it is evening and there is a somewhat large amount of blue and green, gold still overpowers this peace.

The head-gear should be of interest, for it is also made of gold, and its strange cap-like structure is a memory of something ancient and most definitely spiritual.   Spirituality runs deeply in the works of Pogrebinsky in the last decade of the twentieth century, perhaps it was the split with his native country that firmed such a higher and deeper artistic philosophy, or perhaps it was the continuation of the natural artistic evolution which Pogrebinsky had begun long ago, like with the watercolor works of The Garden of Gethsemane in 1972.   And it is this artistic philosophy that radiates with light in the angel series – these angels are a delicate creation, with lightness of being and the ability to withstand existence in such a world of color and light.
